Using Agilent’s Bioanalyzer.

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer uses a chip based system for electrophoresis and provides sizing, quantitation and quality control of DNA, RNA, and proteins with minimal sample usage (1-4ul).

Data is translated into gel-like images (bands) and electropherograms (peaks).

DNA/RNA extractions


Using Promega’s Maxwell MDX16 for automated extraction of DNA or RNA.

The Maxwell MDX16 works on a beads-based system that allows for extraction without any cross-contamination. Use of individual cartridges for each sample allows us to run varying numbers of samples (up to 16 per run). The system can be used for animal and plant tissues including buccal swabs, saliva, blood, and corn kernel.

Our lab has tested the Maxwell system for DNA extractions from buccal swabs and saliva samples and for RNA extractions from Drosophila salivary glands. Results were found to be of good quality with yields higher than those obtained using the Qiagen kit.

Using Biorad’s Trans-blot Turbo System.

Using the Trans-blot Turbo system, our lab can run 4 mini polyacrylamide gels and transfer protein onto four membranes in less than one hour.


Using Applied Biosystem’s 7500-Fast Real – Time pCR system.
